The company grew out of Wampler's hobby. After a friend modified a pedal for him in 2001, he taught himself pedal design through online DIY communities, built a following there under the name Indyguitarist, and self-published books on pedal design. Early pedals were built in his garage and sold on eBay.
Brian Wampler still designs most of the range himself, working circuits out on a breadboard before prototypes go out for testing. Unlike some boutique peers, Wampler does not build pedals at its headquarters: production moved first to a friend's factory in Kentucky and is now handled by Boutique Amps Distribution in California.
The company also runs the guitar-gear podcast Chasing Tone and publishes educational articles on gear topics.
