Co-founded by Masahiro Iijima, a former Korg engineer, Zoom spent its early years developing sound-generator chips, rhythm machines and MIDI synchronisation systems for other manufacturers. Its first product under its own name was the 9002, a very small multi-effects unit built on in-house DSP and designed to clip onto a guitar strap; the company's own history dates its launch to 1990.
Effects have stayed at the core of the catalogue. The compact 505 guitar and 506 bass multi-effects pedals arrived in 1996, followed by the GFX processors and, from 2005, the G-series floor units, beginning with the G2 and G1 and continuing through the G3, G5, G6 and G11. Matching B-series bass and A-series acoustic models run alongside them.
In 2012 Zoom launched the MultiStomp series of compact single-pedal multi-effects with the MS-50G and MS-100BT, adding bass and chorus/delay/reverb versions in 2013. The series got its first full update in eleven years with the MS-50G+ in late 2023, and in 2024 the MultiStomp+ range grew to include the MS-200D+, MS-70CDR+, MS-60B+, MS-80IR+ and MS-90LP+.
