DOD

DOD is a US maker of analogue guitar and bass effects pedals, designed in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the sister brand of DigiTech. John Johnson and David Oreste DiFrancesco founded the company in 1974, and its name comes from DiFrancesco’s initials. It is best known for the Overdrive Preamp 250, the 201 Phasor and the 440 Envelope Filter, and it marketed its range as “America’s Pedals”.

About DOD

In the early 1980s DOD added the Performer 500 series, which used silent FET switching, and the more affordable FX series, including the FX10 Bi-FET Preamp, FX25 Envelope Filter and FX60 Stereo Chorus. It also set up DigiTech as its digital signal-processing brand. DOD became part of Harman International in 1990. In the 1990s, FX pedals developed by designer Jason Lamb, such as the FX69 Grunge, FX32 Meat Box and FX13 Gonkulator, became known for extreme sounds, unusual control names and loud graphics.

After Harman restructured the business in 2018, the DigiTech/DOD engineering team was let go. In 2022 Cor-Tek, the South Korean parent company of Cort Guitars, bought the DigiTech and DOD brands with their intellectual property and assets. At the 2023 NAMM Show it relaunched the Overdrive Preamp 250 as the first of several returning classics, with long-serving DigiTech/DOD staff running US operations from Utah.

The current range mixes reissues such as the 250 and the Meatbox with newer designs: the Rubberneck and DRAG analogue delays, the Carcosa and Chthonic fuzzes, the Gunslinger and Badder Monkey drives, and the Wah-ocTo-Fuzz made with Morley. That makes DOD a place to look both for affordable versions of classic American circuits and for more unusual pedals.
