Marshall

Marshall is a British manufacturer of guitar amplifiers and related audio gear, founded in London and still building its most iconic valve amps at its Bletchley factory in the UK. The brand is closely associated with high-gain rock amp heads, 4×12 cabinets and the stack format that grew from those designs.

About Marshall

Jim Marshall opened the Jim Marshall and Son music shop at 76 Uxbridge Road, Hanwell, on 7 July 1960 with his wife Violet and son Terry. Guitarists shopping there wanted a louder, more aggressive amp sound than the American models then available, so Jim and Terry Marshall and a small technical team began building their own.

The first Marshall amplifier — later known as Amp Number One and the start of the JTM45 line — appeared in September 1962 and drew a rush of shop orders. Production soon outgrew the Hanwell premises: a dedicated factory opened in Hayes in 1964, and by 1967 the company had moved to Bletchley, where UK-made flagship amps are still produced. Landmark models such as the 1959 “Plexi” followed as the catalogue expanded.

Today Marshall also makes consumer speakers, headphones and other music products alongside its amp lines. For players comparing classic British overdrive, stack volume and UK-built valve reissues, Marshall remains a primary historical and current reference.
