Richard H. "Dick" Peterson, a former US Army radio engineer and pipe organ enthusiast, set up the company in 1948. The first products sold under the Peterson name were electronic tuners based on one he had built to tune organs himself. The firm also developed the transistor organ that Gulbransen brought to market in 1957, and from the 1960s it moved into control systems for pipe organs, which still make up around 60 per cent of its sales; the tuner division accounts for most of the rest.
After Dick Peterson died in 2009, his son Scott Peterson took over as president. The current pedal line-up comprises the StroboStomp HD, StroboStomp Mini and StroboVUE. The StroboStomp HD offers true-bypass, buffered and always-on monitor modes, plus a 9 V output to power another pedal.
Peterson rates all its strobe tuners as accurate to within 0.1 cent. Its Sweetened Tunings presets shift target pitches slightly to suit particular instruments, from guitar and bass to pedal steel, banjo and orchestral strings.
