About Neural DSP

The idea began in 2016 when Cresp, then at Darkglass, proposed building a plug-in. The pair chose to start a separate company so Darkglass could stay focused on bass. Neural DSP released the Darkglass Ultra plug-in in April 2018 and the Fortin Nameless suite that September, which became its first major success.

Its Archetype plug-ins were developed with players including Plini, Tim Henson, Cory Wong, Gojira, Tom Morello, John Petrucci and John Mayer, alongside amp suites based on Soldano, Mesa/Boogie, Tone King, Fortin and Morgan designs. The Quad Cortex, a floor unit with Neural Capture amp profiling, debuted at NAMM 2020 and pushed the company into hardware; development drew on machine learning, with help from Aalto University's DSP programme.

In 2024 the company showed TINA, a robot that adjusts the controls of an amp being modelled and records the results so models can be built faster and more consistently. For pedal players, Neural DSP sits at the digital end of the catalogue: a single unit or plug-in standing in for amps, cabinets and a board of effects.
