BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive is an overdrive that builds on the asymmetrical clipping circuit of the 1977 OD-1 and has been in continuous production since 1981.

Asymmetrical clipping produces even-order harmonics that mimic a driven tube amp at controllable volume. An active Tone control shapes treble, and the circuit adds a subtle mid emphasis with a tighter low end than a flat boost.
Lower Drive settings push a clean or lightly driven amp for rhythm grit. Higher settings thicken leads. The pedal responds strongly to guitar volume, so rolling back the guitar cleans the drive without touching the knobs.
Many players also use it as a mid-focused booster into high-gain amps or other dirt pedals. Buffered bypass keeps the signal path consistent when the effect is off.
