The SNES played compressed digital samples instead of relying on simple tone generators or FM synthesis. That bit-reduced sound is the reference point for the pedal's distortion and digital artefacts.
In Program 1, the yellow knob drops bit depth from 24 bits towards 2 bits. The green knob lowers the sample rate. Different notes react differently at a given rate, so small moves change the result a lot.
Program 2 adds a gated reverb and a band-pass filter. Here the yellow knob also sets the gate length, so lower bit depths cut the reverb off sooner. The green knob tunes the filter, from dark low tones to bright high ones. In both programs the blue knob blends dry and wet signal, with an even mix at noon.
