Electro-Harmonix Freeze is a sound retainer pedal that captures a note or chord and sustains it while the footswitch is held. Released in 2010, it uses real-time sampling with a seamless loop.

The dry signal always passes at its original level, and Effect Level sets the volume of the held sound on top. In Fast mode, the sample starts at once and stops on release. Slow mode fades the sample in and out instead. Latch keeps the sound going after release, and the next press replaces it with a new capture.
A double tap in Latch mode silences the held sound. The Slow fade times can be changed at power-up by holding the footswitch and choosing one of three mode-switch positions. The longest setting fades in over 800 ms and out over 3.2 seconds.
Because the dry path stays untouched, the pedal can hold a chord as a pad while you play a melody over it. Effects placed after it process both the held sound and the live signal.
