The starting point was the Garnet Herzog, a 1960s tube drive unit built for Randy Bachman. A dual JFET preamp feeds a discrete single-ended Class A power stage, followed by a circuit that imitates output-transformer saturation in the low frequencies. An internal supply raises the working voltage to ±20 V rails, giving amp-like headroom instead of the hard ceiling of a diode clipper.
Drive and Level together cover a clean boost, a push for a dirty amp, or full saturation. Sag sets how far the power rails droop as the power stage is driven. Low settings add mild compression. At maximum the preamp starts to unbias, so notes gate and sputter like a fuzz, more so with higher Drive.
The Bright switch either keeps the full treble range or trims the highs for a darker voice. Internal jumpers set whether the pedal powers up engaged or bypassed, which helps with loop switchers and rack drawers. The two-knob Canoga fuzz is the second Series A pedal.
