The two gain stages give a wide range, from light breakup to saturated stack-amp drive with long sustain. Low Drive settings keep the attack of each note, while higher settings add compression. Tone sets the brightness and Level sets the output.
The OD-3 works into a clean amp for overdrive or into a driven amp as a boost. It is also suitable for bass. Compared with the SD-1 Super OverDrive and BD-2 Blues Driver, it has a fuller low end and more gain on tap.
Like other BOSS compact pedals, the OD-3 uses buffered bypass, so it can drive long cables in a pedalboard chain.
