Electro-Harmonix · United States
Large-box Black Russian units appeared in the late 1990s with the same core tone family as contemporary Green Russian Big Muffs. A later smaller black-box run continued into the 2000s before production ended. Controls stay Volume, Tone, and Sustain.
The voicing keeps strong low end and is a common reference for bass-friendly Muff tones. The current Bass Big Muff Pi is explicitly inspired by that Russian low-end response, though it is a later USA design rather than a drop-in reissue of this vintage SKU.
No dedicated current Electro-Harmonix product page exists for Black Russian. Used-market examples vary between large and smaller enclosures; this page treats the nickname as the black Russian-made era, not a single unbroken retail SKU.
Fuzz
Electro-Harmonix Black Russian Big Muff Pi is a discontinued Russian-made Sovtek fuzz nicknamed for its black enclosure and yellow graphics.
