EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3 is a distortion and boost pedal with a blendable analogue octave up. EarthQuaker and Sunn O))) built it around the front end used on the album Life Metal, and V3 arrived in 2022.
The signal runs from the octave into the distortion and then the boost. The distortion follows a classic White Face distortion unit. A three-way switch picks op-amp clipping with no diodes, asymmetrical clipping with two silicon diodes and an LED, or the stock symmetrical silicon pair.
The octave is an all-discrete full-wave rectifier at the input. Its knob blends the effect in, and an expression pedal can sweep it. The octave tracks single notes above the twelfth fret on the neck pickup best. Chords turn chaotic. Magnitude is a clean MOSFET booster aimed at driving valve amps.
V3 adds a third footswitch for the octave and a more pronounced octave voice. The octave only works while the distortion side is on. Flexi-Switch relay bypass allows latching or momentary use and needs power to pass signal. The compact Sunn O))) HalfLife puts the Life Pedal circuit in half the footprint, with two footswitches and no separate octave switch.
